Sports Premium

What is the Sports Premium?

The Government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve the quality and levels of particiapation in school sport.  This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.   Each school will receive £8000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year for the next six years. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of the funding

All schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but there is freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Providing new or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Attending sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs

At Whiston Willis, we are committed to providing our children with high quality PE and sport provision that enables them to lead active and healthy lives and recognise the wider benefits of particpating in sports and PE. We will strive to provide the children with opportunities to try new sports to encourage wider particpation and encourage active involvement in sport.

We are also committed to ensuring sustainability in the PE and sport provision within school by providing school staff with high quality CPD opportunities from qualified coaches and through making links with local sports clubs.

The results of this sports audit from July 2016 have resulted in identifying key areas of use for Sports funding which can subsequently be monitored and the impact measured.

  • Further opportunities for a range of after school sports clubs need to be provided.

  • Further opportunities for both inter and intra school competitions needs to be provided.

  • A wider range of activities need to be built into the PE curriculum to ensure interest levels and opportunities to try a range of activities are taken.

  • Provide children with opportunities to enjoy a range of new sports that may stimulate interest.
