Welcome to HedgeHog Class

Date: 29th Aug 2017 @ 6:31pm

Dear Parents,

A very warm welcome to Hedgehog Class. Just wanted to let you know our main focus for this first half term, and the ways in which we will support the children into school life, making them feel settled, safe and happy.

Our first topic will focus on the children, they will learn about themselves and each other, such as likes and dislikes. They will also have the opportunity to share information about their families and their interests. This is also an ideal opportunity for the children to build positive relationships with each other and with the adults they work with.

We will be working on Phase 1 of the Letters and Sounds phonic programme, focusing on developing speaking and listening skills through interactive songs and games. We will progress onto Phase 2 and the children will quickly begin to bring reading books home. Children will receive a 15 minute carpet session with a phonic focus.

Daily calendar and number songs with a focus on counting and number recognition. Daily Maths activities will be set up during the continuous provison e.g magnetic numbers, finding numbers in the sand and ICT opportunities. The children will receive 15 minutes carpet sessions with a maths focus.

Learning Opportunities

Our main focus will be providing the children with activities to develop the children's personal, social and emotional skills. We will do this by allowing the children to explore and become familiar with the classroom , the adults and the rest of the school.

We will develop communication skills through show and tell in small groups. The children will have the opportunity to paint a self-portrait and a family portrait and share this with their new friends. They will develop their knowledge and understanding by learning about others and comparing similarities and differences.

We will look at a variety of people who help us, both in school and the community. The children will have role play opportunities and a variety of small world play opportunities.

How can you help?

As soon as possible, please can you send your child into school with a picture of when they were a baby. This will create discussion of what they can do now compared to when they were a baby.

I look forward to meeting you all soon.
